Barra de Navidad

Like many of the bergs along the Costa Alegre, Barra de Navidad is another darling village known for its relaxing tempo and warm embrace. Primarily a farming and fishing center, this beautiful town of 7,000 is only 45 minutes north of Manzanillo, but a world away from that rat race you are trying to escape.

Surrounding a large lagoon, where “pangas” (water taxis) dart along, Barra De Navidad is a favorite haunt of surfers, divers, kayakers and fisherman alike. Complete with modern amenities, a wonderful array of cuisine and The Grand Bay Hotel, Travel Channels number one hotel/resort, Barra De Navidad offers something for everyone, whether you want to pack your days with action or hide away and do absolutely zero.

About
In 1542, Ruy López de Villalobos and his fleet of six galleon ships left Barra de Navidad for adventures on the high seas. What followed was the mighty Spanish navy constructing a port in Barra de Navidad for shipbuilding, repairs and a jumping off point to the Philippines. At the end of the stone jetty that sticks out into the lagoon you can visit the monument erected to commemorate those journeys. Today, the town has undergone significant development with new hotels/resorts that pristinely exploit the aquatic environs and lush jungle backdrop.
