Popular Festivals
April
Viernes de Dolores - On this day, one can see altars with offerings to the Virgin of Dolores in houses and mines. In the town square Jardín de la Unión crowds of young people walk around the square in the traditional “Paseo de las flores”, the young men giving flowers to the young women.
June
Fiesta de San Juan and the reservoir Presa de la Olla (second half of June).- Cultural-artistic event. On June 24 a popular fiesta is held at the reservoir Presa de la Olla.
July
Opening of the floodgates at the reservoir Presa de la Olla (first Monday in July).- Popular fiesta. The reservoir floodgates are opened in order to flush clean the Guanajuato River. This party has become a tradition for local residents.
La Cueva day (July 31) - Popular celebration in honor of St. Ignatius of Loyola. It consists of a fiesta at the base of the mountain called Cerro de los Picachos.
September
Anniversary of the Fall of Alhóndiga de Granaditas (September 28).- Civic and military parade to commemorate the taking of the Spanish stronghold Alhóndiga de Granaditas and the heroic feat of El Pípila, who burnt down the door of the Alhóndiga to defeat the Spanish army.
October
Festival Internacional Cervantino October 14 - November 1, 2009. This year’s international music festival in Guanajuato and Leon features more than 2,300 artists, 25 nations from 5 continents in venues throughout the colonial city of Guanajuato. Download our guide to the Cervantino now…
Sugar-figure fair (last week of October and first days of November).- Fair vendors make and sell a wide variety of figures made of sugar. The sugar skulls are the most common, because of their role in the “Día de muertos” (November 2).
